The opening date of the first Australian hotel from The Standard has been announced. StandardX Melbourne will launch in Fitzroy on August 8th. This will be the world debut of the group's StandardX brand, described as the "rebellious younger sibling of The Standard." The StandardX will have a lower price point on rooms, considered to have a more relaxed energy. Instead of encouraging guests to stay in and party like the original Standard, the new brand offers the perfect launchpad from which patrons can explore their surroundings. The Melbourne hotel won't have the Boom Boom Room, the well-known nightclub from The Standard's New York High Line location but will have The Roof, a guests-only Mexican-inspired bard and diner on the roof of the building. There will also be a Thai restaurant. The new hotel will have 125 rooms, starting with the "Cozy King" with the top room being the 48 square meter Suite Spot. Following this launch, Standard International plans to expand the brand to Bangkok and then onto others. The question now is who will be doing the expansion? A Bloomberg story reported that Hyatt Hotels Corporation is in advanced talks to acquire Standard International. Hyatt would not comment specifically, just saying their strategy is to have asset-light growth through both organic growth and strategic acquisitions. Read more about this at Skift.
