Hong Kong Hoteliers Watch Golden Week Nervously
Skift Take
Industry watchers expect Hong Kong to see at least single-digit growth in the number of mainland tourists over the five-day Labour Day Golden Week.
The South China Morning Post said the Hong Kong Tourism Association is expecting Hong Kong to see at least single-digit growth in the number of mainland tourists over the five-day Labour Day Golden Week. They are optimistic that the multi-entry visit scheme designed for Shenzhen residents will draw tourists to the city. Even single-digit growth drives 60,000 to 80,000 more people than last year visiting the city. The Immigration Dept earlier said they expect about 840,000 visitors from the mainland over the break. Hoteliers such as Miramar Group, said they are expecting hotel occupancies to run in the 90s. They warned that consumers have been spending less, whether local or from the mainland.
Macau's hotel occupancy rate climbed 5.2 percentage points year on year to reach 90.1% in the first quarter, with rooms available then down by -5.8% to 44,000. The Statistics and Census Service said visitors spent an average 1.7 nights in Macau, with tours up 9.
