California Hotel Sales Cool Off

The DJIA fell 338 points on Friday while Nasdaq was down 154, the S&P 500 was down 43 points and the 10 year treasury yield was down .07 to 3.19%. After a record-breaking 2021 for hotel sales in California , hotel transaction have cooled off in the state in the first six months of this year. ore and more Baltimore hotels are slated to become apartments . In Downtown Baltimore, at least a half dozen hotels have closed and sold to a new owner within the past two and a half years.

Equity Markets Make a Dramatic Recovery

The equity markets made a dramatic recovery considering investors in Treasuries gave the Fed a no-confidence raspberry, not liking the comments from one of the Governors today at all. Short-Term Rental Demand Is Up

The  DJIA  ended the day down 280 points while  Nasdaq  was down 67, the  S&P 500 fell 31 points and the 10 year treasury yield was up .02 to 3.13%. Lodging stocks were lower.  MCG  fell -8% today and hit a new all time low.  SOND  was up 5%. STR  said  U.S. hotel RevPAR  for the week ending August 27 th  was up 18.2%.  RevPAR versus the same week in 2019 was up 12.1%. Speaking during a session at the  Hotel Data Conference ,  AirDNA Director of Product Max Bernstein  said as of June 2022,  demand for short-term rentals  is up 21% indexed to 2019

Cambodia Is Recovering, But Still Struggling

STR reported China hotel RevPAR for the week ended 8/20 was up 89.7% year over year, up against an easy -43.4%. Cambodia’s Ministry of Tourism said that while tourism is recovering, almost 50% of businesses in Cambodia’s main tourism hub of Siem Reap are still closed . In India, mid-sized hotel brands have embarked on aggressive plans and are signing up hotels at a record pace, encouraged by a major turnaround in performance across the country.

Vietnam Tourism on Track to Beat 2019 Revenue Numbers

Vietnam’s tourism sector  is forecast to record US$11.1 billion in revenue in 2024, which would  exceed the 2019 tourism revenue number  of US$10.8 billion. Hotelivate said Tier-III cities with resort locations in India have seen the strongest recovery amid a rebound in leisure tourism. Accor is expanding its presence in the Philippines  with the signing of two new properties in Clark City.

Macau Visitors Still Down YoY

Macau’s tally of visitors reached 81,798 for the seven days from August 12 to August 18 inclusive, a daily average of about 11,685. According to the latest Construction Pipeline Trend Report from Lodging Econometrics , the total China hotel construction pipeline is at 3,693 projects/701,974 rooms. Hilton signed six new luxury hotels in Asia Pacific which will open over the next four years.

China Covid Infections Hit 3-Month High

China reported 2,181 new Covid cases on Saturday , with infections surging to a three month high. Real Commercial said Sydney hotel occupancies are beginning to slip but hoteliers are still charging higher room rates. Tuan Sing Holdings is close to announcing plans to redevelop its 550 room Grand Hyatt Hotel in Melbourne’s Collins Street into a major mixed-use development.

Sterling Holiday Resorts , a subsidiary of Thomas Cook , said they will double its pan-India inventory to 5,000 rooms in the next three years. Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund and Cain International have invested $900 million in Aman Group to help accelerate the global expansion of the company. China reported 2,312 new Covid infections nationwide today , the first time in more than three months that cases topped 2,000 for three consecutive days. Singapore’s Changi Airport emerged as the busiest airport in Asia in the three months to June 30, 2022, recording more than double the number of passenger movements than its nearest rival.
