Choice Tells Wyndham to Reconsider

Choice Hotels has urged Wyndham Hotels to consider a merger, but Wyndham has firmly declined any interest in the proposal. The chairman of Wyndham revealed they almost acquired Choice Hotels 20 years ago. The U.S. construction pipeline shows growth, with over 5,700 projects and 672,000 rooms, driven by a strong upper midscale chain scale presence. Renovation and conversion projects are on the rise, and new hotel openings are expected to increase in the coming years. Several hotel and resort projects are underway, including Westin Washington, DC Downtown, Opry Entertainment Group’s renovation in Austin, Four Seasons expanding its Private Retreats collection, and Tommy Bahama’s debut resort in California. Additionally, new developments in Florida, Rhode Island, and Indiana are on the horizon.

Vietnam’s Booming Hotel Sector

The global hotel industry is seeing increased activity with notable transactions in Vietnam, Macau, Japan, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Thailand, and India. Key deals include Marriott International’s operation of seven hotels from Vinpearl in Vietnam, Accor’s new Novotel in Nara, Japan, and DoubleDragon’s launch of the largest hotel in Bonifacio Global City in the Philippines. Several hotel brands are expanding their footprints, with Wyndham Hotels & Resorts signing two agreements with Fulcrum Ventures Asia and Marriott International’s Fairfield brand entering Agra, India.

Multiple Lodging Stocks Hit New Lows

The 10-year treasury yield was up .20 today to 3.71%. Do we need to tell you what happened to stocks? The DJIA was down 107, Nasdaq was down 153, the S&P 500 was down 32. Truist reported on meetings they held with the management of Wyndham Hotels . Demand trends remain favorable and while management is closely monitoring bookings, length of stay, cancellation rates and such, they see no immediate cause for concern. As recent demand for hotel rooms breaks records and prices skyrocket, hotel investors are taking notice as 80% of them plan on buying throughout the remainder of 2022 and into 2023 .
