Commonwealth Hotels Acquires 2 Houston Properties

Overall, stocks gave back most of their pre-market gains. Lodging stocks wound up mixed on the day. Commonwealth Hotels acquired the 120-suite Residence Inn Houston-West University and the 100-room Courtyard by Marriott Houston-West University. Aimbridge Hospitality announced the expansion of its portfolio with the addition of three extended stay properties recently acquired by Three Wall Capital, LLC.

Chatham Lodging Trust and Park Hotels Restore Their Dividends

Chatham Lodging Trust announced its board of trustees reinstated their common dividend, announcing a fourth-quarter common share dividend of $0.07 per common share. Park Hotels & Resorts announced a $0.25 per share fourth-quarter cash dividend. $0.12 per share of that represents the fourth quarter payment based on 2022 results. Lodging stocks were modestly higher. The only big mover of note was MCG , up 8%.

Vietnam Hits a New Post-Pandemic Tourism High

Sri Lanka Tourism outlined key strategies to double the arrivals to 1.5 million and generate an income of over $5 billion highlighting the sector as a major economic driver. The number of international tourists arriving in Vietnam reached 596,900 in November, the highest monthly total since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. Marriott International announced the opening of Le Meridien Seoul Myeongdong  and Moxy Seoul Myeongdong , showing how they continue to expand their lifestyle offering in Seoul, South Korea .

Hyatt Hotels to Acquire Dream Hotel Group

Hyatt Hotels Corporation and Dream Hotel Group announced an agreement for a Hyatt affiliate to acquire Dream Hotel Group’s lifestyle hotel brand and management platform. Hyatt Hotels Corporation announced the opening of Rancho Pescadero , the first Hyatt branded luxury resort to debut in Todos Santos in Mexico . The Westin Hilton Head Island Resort & Spa , located in South Carolina , has embarked on a $10 million renovation.

Lodging Stocks End Higher While Hotel Index Stock Drops

The DJIA jumped 551 points today while Nasdaq was up 354, the S&P 500 was up 95 points and the 10-year treasury yield was up .01 at 4.02%. The Baird/STR Hotel Stock Index fell -9.1% in September. Despite continued strong RevPAR, both year over year and 2019 comps, the stock index has dropped -20.6% in the first 9 months of the year. Driftwood Capital broke ground on the Element by Westin , a new 130-key extended-stay hotel located on prime oceanfront property in Melbourne, FL .

All Hotel Classes Are Showing ADR Recovery

The DJIA fell 400 points on Friday while Nasdaq was down 328, the S&P 500 fell 86 points and the 10- year treasury yield pierced the 4% ceiling and probably is not done yet. According to CoStar , boutique hotels are performing well in 2022 and all classes show recovery in ADR, surpassing 2019 peak levels and leading the U.S. hotel industry. Hilton and Dittmar Company announced the signing of Hilton at The Key, Arlington-Rosslyn , located just minutes from Washington D.C. in Arlington, VA.

Playa Hotels Says Demand Is Strong

The D JIA was up 36 points, Nasdaq was down 116, the S&P 500 fell 24 points and the 10 year treasury yield is knocking on the door of 4%, up .05 to 3.94%. Truist Securities reported on investor meetings they held with Playa Hotels & Resorts management. Demand trends were among the most discussed topics but management saying business on the books looks great, reiterating the strength of demand . Pacifica Hotels announced the $32.9 million purchase of the Kimpton Hotel Vintage Portland .

RevPAR Up 30% YoY and 13% Vs. 2019

The markets brightened their mood somewhat on Wednesday. The  DJIA rose 1.89%, Nasdaq was up 2.05%, the S&P 500 climbed 1.96% and the 10-year treasury yield had its steepest one-day drop since March 2009. STR reported US lodging data for the week ended 9/24. Hotel RevPAR was up 30.3% year over year while up 13.7% when compared with the same week in 2019. Dajia Insurance Group Co has put three hotels in the US up for sale, hoping to generate US$1.3 billion to take advantage of an expected surge in leisure travel and resort business.
