Hyatt’s Grand Ambitions for 2023
Lodging stocks were higher. SLNA topped the list with a 10% gain followed by AHT and VCSA, both up 6%. We start today’s newsletter on a sad note as many of you probably heard that Bruce White , the founder and chairman of White Lodging , passed away at the age of 70. Pebblebrook Hotel Trust gave a January operations update and include an update on 4Q preliminary results. Remember they roiled the Lodging REIT stocks when they preannounced weaker than expected 4Q results. -

Hilton Launches Premium Economy Brand Spark
Lodging stocks were higher led by AHT, up another 10%. ABNB and PLYA were both up 7% on the day while VCSA was up 6% and HST rose 5%. Truist gave their 2023 lodging preview , saying they see a mixed bag for demand/pricing/supply trends for the lodging companies. Similar to the past nine months, they see “macro over micro” at the moment. DiamondRock Hospitality said their preliminary 4Q22 comparable revenue grew 23.4% year over year and 8.5% compared to 2019. -

DiamondRock Beats Preliminary Results
DiamondRock Hospitality reported 3Q results, beating the preliminary results they announced two weeks ago. Jefferies cut its rating on Xenia Hotels & Resorts to Hold from Buy. Lodging stocks were mixed. SLNA plunged another -20%, quickly becoming the biggest disaster in a long line of SPAC disappointments in the past year -

According to the third quarter United States Construction Pipeline Trend Report from Lodging Econometrics , the U.S. market with the largest hotel construction pipeline by projects is Dallas . Despite down markets, lodging stocks were modestly higher even though the two biggest movers were to the downside. BWH Hotel Group announced the launch of a new extended stay brand . -

Selina Plunges on Second Trading Day
Pebblebrook Hotel Trust reported sold 3Q22 earnings, but since they give monthly updates and pre-announced, there was no surprise. While lodging stocks were higher, the action in Selina on Friday was just as ridiculous as on Thursday but in the other direction. While Travel + Leisure’s stock price rebounded a little bit after Thursday’s earnings-induced decline, Credit Suisse lowered the boom on them. -

July Room Rates Hit New High
According to July 2022 data from STR , the U.S. hotel industry reported record-high monthly room rates on a nominal basis. Raymond James believes the recovery in global travel still has plenty of room to run. They believe this is the earliest stage of what is set up to be a multi-year fundamental recovery in global travel. A 13-F filing from Sunstone Hotels showed Blackstone Group had taken a 4.1% stake in SHO. -

Hotel Acquisitions Cool in Northern California
The DJIA rose 19 points, Nasdaq was up 27, the S&P 500 was up 10, the 10-year Treasury yield was down .01 to 2.88% and lodging stocks were higher on a calm day in the market. B.Riley Securities upped its price target on Ashford Inc to $23 from $19. Pebblebrook Hotel Trust said total revenue in July topped pre-pandemic levels for the first time since the onset of the pandemic.
