New York Hotel Union Marks Historic Victory

Craig-Hallum initiated coverage of LuxUrban Hotels with a Buy rating and a $10 price target. A New York hotel union reached a deal with hotel owners and operators, boosting the wages of hospitality workers by $7.50 an hour, the largest increase in the union’s 100-year history . Beginning this month, Waldorf Astoria Orlando in Florida will undergo a comprehensive, multi-phase re-imagination expected to debut in December 2023.

Japan Is Nearly Recovered But Thailand Still Lags

The Tourism Authority of Thailand expects the country’s tourism sector to generate up to 2.4 trillion baht in revenue this year, or 80% of earnings in 2019 . STR said Japan’s recovery is moving in the right direction as the current central administration continues to focus on growing both domestic and inbound tourism. The director of the Macao Government Tourism Office said the booking rate for Macau hotels over Easter was currently at between 50% and 60%.

Hilton's Plans to Double Its Portfolio in Puerto Rico

Hilton announces plans to double its hotel portfolio in Puerto Rico by 2027, with the addition of seven new properties. The expansion will create around 2,100 new jobs and contribute to the island's economic recovery following the devastation caused by Hurricane Maria in 2017. Hilton's investment in Puerto Rico's tourism industry is a sign of the company's confidence in the island's potential as a destination for both leisure and business travelers.

US hotel RevPAR was up 11.1% year over year.

Singapore to Welcome The Standard and Aloft Brands

Occupancy rates at hotels in Macau rose by 25.4 percentage points in January year over year, reaching 74%. The Standard Hotel is expected to open in the fourth quarter of 2023 near Orchard Road in Singapore , across from Shangri-La Singapore along Orange Grove Road. Hiap Hoe has entered into a franchise agreement with Luxury Hotels International of Hong Kong to operate two hotels at 16 AH Hood Road and 1 Jalan Rajah and rebrand them as Aloft Singapore Novena .

Chinese Outbound Travel Continues to Expand

Singapore has urged Chinese authorities to restore flight capacity between the two nations to pre-Covid levels as soon as possible in a bid to improve business and tourism ties. South Korea will increase the number of flights into the country from China to 80 from 62 per week by the end of this month. European Union countries have agreed to phase out pre-departure Covid testing for travelers from China by the end of the month.

Shipping Container Hotel Coming to Indianapolis

The Baird/STR Hotel Stock Index was up 16.4% in January from December. The Hotel Brand sub-index was up 16.2% and the Hotel REIT sub-index rose 17.1%. Hilton, Easton’s Group of Hotels and the Gupta Group announced the opening of Canopy by Hilton Toronto Yorkville, marking the brand’s Canadian debut. The DJIA rose 130 points on Friday while Nasdaq was down 69, the S&P 500 was down 11 points and the 10 year treasury yield took a breather, down -0.4 to 3.83%. Lodging stocks were lower.

Relaxed Covid Restrictions Buoy Singapore, Taiwan and Australia

Singapore signaled an end to the Covid-19 era restrictions , removing nearly all remaining mask rules as well as all border restrictions for arrivals who are not fully vaccinated. All travel restrictions for residents of Hong Kong and Macau wishing to go to Taiwan will be lifted on February 20, three years after they were imposed. STR said Australia’s hotel performance turned a massive corner during the first half of 2022 as the Omicron wave subsided and governments relaxed travel restrictions around the country.

Marriott's Stellar Quarter and Optimistic Outlook

Marriott International followed up Hilton’s solid 4Q earnings report with one of their own, easily beating estimates on solid 4.6% RevPAR growth. 21c Museum Hotels will open its tenth hotel this spring, a 10-story lodging in St. Louis, Missouri.  Marriott was up $6.90 a share, Hyatt was up $4.73, Hilton was up $2.38 and Airbnb is currently surging double digits in after hours trading on their earnings report

The Nation reported hotels in Thailand expect occupancy rates to start picking up in the second half of this year. China lifting restrictions is playing a big part in that projection. AC Hotels by Marriott announced its brand debut in Greater China with the opening of AC Hotels by Marriott Suzhou . OUE Limited and OUE Commercial REIT Management announced the reopening of the 446-room Orchard Wing at Hilton Singapore Orchard .
