U.S. Interest Rate Increase Pushes Lodging Stocks Lower
STR gave U.S. lodging data for the week ended 3/18. US hotel RevPAR rose 10.4% year over year. When compared with the same week in 2019, US hotel RevPAR was up 20.8%. We can’t tell if the markets genuinely hate U.S. Fed Chief Jerome Powell or if the guy should just have a stand-in for his press conferences. Redburn Partners lowered its rating on InterContinental Hotels Group to Sell. UBS Group downgraded shares of Melia Hotels International from a Buy rating to a Sell rating. -

Shrugging Off the Fed, Hotels Put Heads in Beds
voco hotels celebrated 100 properties signed and opened globally. The emerging IHG Hotels & Resorts’ brand reached the milestone in just five years after its first-ever hotel opening. Island Hospitality Management announced the company added 14 hotels to its third-party management portfolio during 2022. Moxy Williamsburg debuted today as the brand’s first hotel in Brooklyn, New York. -

Hard Rock International Nears Completion of Mirage Hotel Acquisition
Aloft Hotels announced it has arrived in Playa del Carmen, Mexico , marking the third Aloft hotel in the Caribbean. Two new hotels are being planned by Performance Capital Partners LLC in Surprise, Arizona . A new dual-brand Marriott TownePlace Suites and Marriott Fairfield Inn & Suites. MCR acquired the Hyatt Place Miami Airport East in Miami, FL , marking the company’s ninth hotel in Florida and its first Hyatt hotel. -

Weakening or Strengthening? Hotel Performance Forecasts
Raymond James warned that inflation and a dimming economic outlook could begin to weigh on travel starting in the fourth quarter. STR and Tourism Economics adjusted occupancy slightly downward but maintained previous projections for ADR and RevPAR in their final U.S. hotel forecast revision of 2022. Following seasonal patterns, Canada’s hotel performance fell from the month prior but the ADR and RevPAR were higher than the pre-pandemic comparables -

Airbnb Given an Outperform Rating
Bernstein initiated coverage on Airbnb with an Outperform rating and $143 price target. B of A Securities cut their rating on Membership Collective to Underperform from Buy. They lowered their price target to $4 from $12. Service Properties Trust announced it amended the agreement governing its revolving credit facility and exercised its option to extend its maturity date to July 2023. -

IHG’s Data Breach Concerns
The DJIA rose 230 points while Nasdaq was up 154, the S&P 500 rose 43 points and the 10-year treasury yield was up .04 to 3.36%. Lodging stocks were modestly higher. IHG’s hack appears to be a lot worse than the ones at other hotels as the ransomware attack may very well impact their 3Q results as they continue to have their online reservation system crippled by the attack. Watermark Lodging Trust said the proposed acquisition of the company by private real estate funds managed by Brookfield was approved by its stockholders. -

July Room Rates Hit New High
According to July 2022 data from STR , the U.S. hotel industry reported record-high monthly room rates on a nominal basis. Raymond James believes the recovery in global travel still has plenty of room to run. They believe this is the earliest stage of what is set up to be a multi-year fundamental recovery in global travel. A 13-F filing from Sunstone Hotels showed Blackstone Group had taken a 4.1% stake in SHO. -

Membership Collective Group shares took it on the chin today, announcing 2Q results on a day when investors were not in the mood for anything. Host Hotels’ price target was raised to $20 by Citigroup . Baird issued a bullish report on Apple Hospitality REIT but removed the Bullish Fresh Pick designation as shares have increased 18% since their positive call in late June.
