U.S. Hotel RevPAR Tops 2019 for Week Ending 11/19

STR reported US lodging data for the week ended 11/19. US hotel RevPAR was up 20.1% year over year while up 19.3% for the same week in 2019. Following weeks of preliminary groundwork, construction has finally begun on the new Moxy Asheville - North Carolina’s first Moxy Hotel. Hilton Worldwide Holdings Inc . is partnering with Proof & Co.’s beverage consultancy arm to revamp the bar experience at all of its Waldorf Astoria properties.

U.S. Rates Are Higher But Not Back to 2019

Airbnb saw its rating cut at Baird to Neutral from Outperform. Baird lowered their price target to $100 from $120. The U.S hotel industry reported higher performance from the month prior but weakened comparisons with 2019 , according to October 2022 data from STR . Through Q3 2022 , the U.S. hotel industry exceeded 2019 RevPAR levels by 6.4%, based on data from STR.

Los Cabos, Mexico’s Growth Attracts More Hotel Brands

Lodging stocks were mostly lower. SOND was up 6% but that was pretty much it for any type of positive movement.  MCG fell another -11%, SLNA was down -7%, SOHO and ABNB both fell -5%. JP Morgan lowered their rating on Membership Collective Group to Neutral from Overweight. JPM said their downgraded was based on MGC’s exposure to Europe. Los Cabos Tourism Board announced unprecedented growth in tourism arrivals is expected by the end of 2022 with more than 3.3 million visitors.

Standard International Expands Its International Ambitions

Either investors did not like Membership Collective Group’s earnings report, their management changes or both but the stock got crushed today, down -19%. STR reported US lodging data for the week ended 11/12. US RevPAR was up 19.4%, year over year. The Development Review Committee for Pompano Beach, Florida , is considering the site plan for a 1.1-acre property for which MHG Hotels proposed a Homewood Suites by Hilton hotel.

The Current State of Vacation Ownership

The DJIA rose 56 points while Nasdaq was up 162, the S&P 500 rose 35 points and the 10 year treasury yield fell .07 to 3.80%. Lodging stocks were modestly higher. Truist published a report on Vacation Ownership following 3Q results from the public companies involved in the segment. Genuine Hospitality announced the opening of Tru by Hilton Naperville Chicago , the first Tru by Hilton in Illinois.

Hilton Grand Vacations' Quarterly Earnings Beat Rivals

Hilton Grand Vacations clearly had the best report of the timeshare group with their 3Q results, with a solid beat of estimates. STR reported US hotel RevPAR rose 21.1% year over year for the week ended 11/5. JLL’s Hotels & Hospitality Group released its second annual Hotels Global Asset Management Report outlining tips for profitability and minimizing operational risks.

International Visitors to the U.S. Bring in New Highs

The DJIA rose 334 points, Nasdaq was up 52, the S&P 500 rose 21 points and the 10 year treasury yield was down .09 to 4.13%. Apple Hospitality reported a modest beat with RevPAR up 7.5% versus 3Q19. In September and October APLE bought back a modest amount of stock just above $14 a share. Sunstone Hotel Investors reported a slight 3Q beat. SHO continues to be a buyer of their own stock under $10.

Choice Hotels Receives Mixed Response to Earnings

Lodging stocks were mixed. Choice (CHH) was the big loser, down -9%, while MCG was down -7% and AINC fell -6%. Choice Hotels received a mixed response to their 3Q earnings report from analysts and a big thumbs down from investors. Hilton announced the opening of its two-hundredth hotel in the Caribbean and Latin America, Waldorf Astoria Cancun , a 173-room luxury resort set on 100 acres of coastline.

DiamondRock Beats Preliminary Results

DiamondRock Hospitality reported 3Q results, beating the preliminary results they announced two weeks ago. Jefferies cut its rating on Xenia Hotels & Resorts to Hold from Buy. Lodging stocks were mixed. SLNA plunged another -20%, quickly becoming the biggest disaster in a long line of SPAC disappointments in the past year

Marriott Leads the Construction Pipeline in the U.S.

Ryman Hospitality Properties beat 3Q EBITDA estimates while giving a small 4Q guidance raise. Lodging stocks were mixed. SOND rose 8% but Selina (SLNA) plunged another -23% and is now down to near where it was in price when they completed the merger with BOA. Timeshare is definitely a mixed bag this earnings season. Following up on TNL’s disappointing results, Marriott Vacations gave a mixed 3Q along with guidance that seems mixed as well.
