IHG’s Ambitious Plans for Greater China
IHG Hotels & Resorts said the are pursuing an ambitious expansion plan in Greater China that explores popular and emerging destinations. Hilton’s upscale focused service brand, Hilton Garden Inn , announced the opening of its fiftieth property in Greater China. Brisbane’s $3.6 billion Queen’s Wharf Brisbane resort and casino will officially open before Christmas. -

Accor and Ennismore Have Ambitious Plans for 2023
The Chinese Ministry of Culture and Tourism announced the country has decided to resume outbound group travel to selected countries including Sri Lanka early next month. The Philippines Dept. of Tourism said it is aiming to attract 4.8 million foreign visitors in 2023, almost double the 2.6 million in 2022. The initial goal in 2022 was 1.7 million arrivals. Sri Lanka Tourism is looking at attracting 1.5 million tourist arrivals for 2023. They are optimistic about achieving revenue of US$2.8 billion from tourism for this year. -

Thailand Drops Vaccination Entry Policy
Thailand rescinded its entry policy which requires visitors to show proof of a Covid-19 vaccination, citing sufficient immunization levels in China and the rest of the world. Vietnamnet reported thousands of people lined up at the Mong Cai border gates this past weekend to cross into China. The main requirements to cross were removed on December 31. The first Marriott International property to open on the North side of Phu Quoc in Vietnam has launched. -

Europe Will Supersede APAC as Leading Travel Region
A new report from international travel industry analysts, the Centre for Aviation , predicts the Asia Pacific region will no longer be the world’s largest travel region by the end of 2022. Hyatt Hotels announced the opening of the Fuji Speedway Hotel in Shizuoka, Japan , the first property within The Unbound Collection by Hyatt brand in Japan. Business Line reported Accor plans to divest its stake in Indian ventures , opting to go asset-light through management contract deals. -

Macau Visitors Still Down YoY
Macau’s tally of visitors reached 81,798 for the seven days from August 12 to August 18 inclusive, a daily average of about 11,685. According to the latest Construction Pipeline Trend Report from Lodging Econometrics , the total China hotel construction pipeline is at 3,693 projects/701,974 rooms. Hilton signed six new luxury hotels in Asia Pacific which will open over the next four years.
