STR reported a 54.2% increase in China's hotel RevPAR compared to last year, with Jakarta hotels reaching record occupancy and RevPAR levels, boosted by events like a Coldplay concert. Accor announced the opening of five new properties in Asia, along with the first Movenpick by Accor destination in Qingdao, China, as part of a strategic alliance with Sunmei Group, planning over 400 new properties across China. IHG, Radisson, and Wyndham announced new hotel openings in Amritsar, Surat, Goa, and Cebu, with IHG's voco Amritsar Airport and Radisson's Uday Palace Navsari targeting diverse locations.

China hotel RevPAR for the week ending October 14th increased by 73.4% YoY, with a -35.5% comp from 2022, but was still down -18.3% compared to the same week in 2019. The Ascott Limited introduced The Crest Collection brand in Asia, opening three properties in Singapore, Indonesia, and Malaysia with heritage-themed hospitality experiences. Various hotel developments and transactions include Royal Orchid & Regenta's new property in Mysuru, a 4-star hotel sale in Vadodara, Lemon Tree Hotels' franchise agreement in Vadodara, Kenilworth Hotel's upcoming project in Coimbatore, Bong Sen Corp's plan to sell assets in Vietnam, and BWHSM Hotels' expansion in Bangkok. Pride Hotels Group appointed Chandrashekhar Belose as Corporate Chief Engineer, focusing on sustainability measures.

Foreign arrivals in the Philippines reached 3.3 million in the first eight months of 2023, approaching the government's annual goal of 4.8 million. South Korea was the top source of inbound tourists. Trip.com Group reported robust recovery in domestic and international business in 2Q23, with strong growth in domestic hotel bookings in China. However, outbound hotel and air reservations remained down compared to pre-Covid levels. Wyndham Hotels & Resorts signed three new agreements with Indonesia Hospitality Group, expanding its presence in Indonesia. This follows the earlier launch of the Howard Johnson by Wyndham brand in Indonesia.

In Q2 2023, the Asia Pacific hotel construction pipeline reached a record high of 1,936 projects with 401,766 rooms. Luxury, upper upscale, and upscale projects dominated the pipeline. Countries with the largest pipelines are India, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, and Japan. Macau has surpassed Hong Kong as the preferred travel destination for mainland Chinese travelers in 2023, receiving nearly twice as many visitors. Around 50.9% of outbound Chinese travelers chose Macau, while Hong Kong received about 26.7%. Mainland Chinese tourists prefer destinations in East Asia and Southeast Asia. Accor is expanding its hotel offerings. They are introducing the Handwritten Collection in Thailand with the Andaman Beach Hotel Phuket, opening a Mercure hotel in Lucknow, India, and launching Lords Inn hotels in Jamnagar, Gujarat, and Kanki, West Bengal. Accor has also partnered with Reliance Industries and Renest Hotels & Resorts for new properties.

China hotel RevPAR increased by 27.9% year over year and by 13.7% when compared to 2019. Japan experienced a resurgence in inbound tourism, with GCC countries leading the way, and June 2023 saw 72% of the visitor numbers compared to June 2019. Several hotels, including W Sydney , W Macao Studio City , and The Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel , have announced openings and renovations to cater to the recovering travel demand. Additionally, CapitaLand Ascott Trust signed a Memorandum of Understanding for acquiring lodging assets in the UK, Ireland, and Indonesia.

STR  reported China hotel RevPAR was up 99% year over year for the week ended May 13 . According to Lodging Econometrics’ latest China Construction Pipeline Trend Report , China’s total hotel construction pipeline stand sat at 3,659 projects/680,959 rooms at the end of Q1 2023. Macau visitor arrivals rose 16.2% in April from March, up 275% year over year, to 2,274,050.

The total number of esports hotels in China exceeded 20,000 by the end of February this year, with the occupancy rate reaching an average of 60%. Trip.com said the interest in travel to mainland China has bounced back since the country resumed foreign visa applications. HVS Anarock’s latest report on India says occupancy will improve to 66% at hotels in 2023.
