Marriott's New Midscale Brand Is Called StudioRes

MAR and HLT lodging stocks hit new highs, while several stock targets and ratings were adjusted. Q2 2023 shows a total construction pipeline of 552 projects/88,477 rooms in Latin America. Mexico leads with 213 projects/33,853 rooms. Marriott International dominates the franchise scene with 116 projects/18,733 rooms. Project MidX Studios is renamed StudioRes by MAR for the US and Canada market.

Choice Is Pursing Wyndham

The big news was a rumor with the Wall Street Journal reporting Choice Hotels is making a move to acquire Wyndham Hotels & Resorts . Truist upped their price target on Hyatt Hotels to $149 from $145. This follows H’s Investor Day and the tours of Apple Leisure Group resorts. Pebblebrook Hotel Trust gave their monthly update saying for 2Q23, overall demand and profitability trends continue to remain within expectations .

Market Ignores Hilton's Stellar Quarter

Hilton kicked off earnings season with solid results. You could not get much better than Hilton’s with a solid beat. Travel + Leisure beat expectations, bought back $102 million worth of stock and gave out more in dividends than expected. The stock went down. Sonder has become the first of the SPACs that are either penny stocks or close to it, to receive a deficiency notice from their trading exchange.

CBRE Raises Forecast for Hotel Performance in 2023

Earnings rolled out at a rapid pace with  Hyatt, Wyndham, Host and Hersha reporting results. Hyatt reported above expectations and sounded very confident on the conference call. The lodging stock star of the day was definitely  Service Properties Trust . SVC owns nearly 8% of Travel Centers of America and RMR has 1.67%. Travel Center agreed to be bought by BP for $1.3 billion. CBRE is raising its forecast for hotel performance on the heels of industry gains in Q4 2022 and the expectation of slightly positive GDP growth in 2023.

IHG and Iberostar Enter Long-Term Commercial Agreement

We may be seeing a short week slowdown already starting in the financial markets. Lodging stocks were modestly lower. Deutsche Bank 's  Gaming, Lodging, Leisure & Restaurant Conference 'soverarching chorus was stability in trends and company outlooks. Pebblebrook Hotel Trust , in their monthly update, referenced that the end of October brought a return of seasonality.

The Current State of Vacation Ownership

The DJIA rose 56 points while Nasdaq was up 162, the S&P 500 rose 35 points and the 10 year treasury yield fell .07 to 3.80%. Lodging stocks were modestly higher. Truist published a report on Vacation Ownership following 3Q results from the public companies involved in the segment. Genuine Hospitality announced the opening of Tru by Hilton Naperville Chicago , the first Tru by Hilton in Illinois.

All Hotel Classes Are Showing ADR Recovery

The DJIA fell 400 points on Friday while Nasdaq was down 328, the S&P 500 fell 86 points and the 10- year treasury yield pierced the 4% ceiling and probably is not done yet. According to CoStar , boutique hotels are performing well in 2022 and all classes show recovery in ADR, surpassing 2019 peak levels and leading the U.S. hotel industry. Hilton and Dittmar Company announced the signing of Hilton at The Key, Arlington-Rosslyn , located just minutes from Washington D.C. in Arlington, VA.

Lodging Stocks End the Week on a Down Note

The Baird/STR Hotel Stock Index was up 14.3% in July. Year to date the first seven months of 2022, the stock index is still down by -10.4%. According to Bloomberg, the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority is exploring options, including a possible sale of the Miami Beach Edition hotel . AC Hotels by Marriott announced the opening of the new AC Hotel by Marriott Monterrey Valle , its first hotel in the city of Monterrey, Nuevo Leon
