Lodging Stocks Lower Despite Strong Earnings
Lodging stocks were lower again. SLNA looks like it is going to go down to penny stock status, down another -28% to another new low. The last 24 hours had a barrage of earnings reports and not many of them were taken well. Hyatt was picked as the best of the group even with results some deemed as weaker than expected which says a lot about the other reports. Marriott’s 3Q was in line but net rooms growth was trimmed for the full year with China blamed. -

September Marked Third Consecutive Month of U.S. Hotel Construction Growth
The DJIA fell 91 points, Nasdaq was down 53, the S&P 500 fell 25 points and the 10-year treasury yield rose another .10 to 4.23%. Truist believes the companies most likely to see the greatest degree of earnings outperformance this 3Q earnings season will be those with the highest exposure to the group segment. A new survey from the Hospitality Asset Managers Association painted a somewhat rosy picture for the industry. -

All Hotel Classes Are Showing ADR Recovery
The DJIA fell 400 points on Friday while Nasdaq was down 328, the S&P 500 fell 86 points and the 10- year treasury yield pierced the 4% ceiling and probably is not done yet. According to CoStar , boutique hotels are performing well in 2022 and all classes show recovery in ADR, surpassing 2019 peak levels and leading the U.S. hotel industry. Hilton and Dittmar Company announced the signing of Hilton at The Key, Arlington-Rosslyn , located just minutes from Washington D.C. in Arlington, VA. -

Summer Tourism Spending in U.S. Spikes YoY
The DJIA plunged 630 points on Friday while Nasdaq was down 421, the S&P 500fell 105 points and the 10 year treasury yield jumped .06 to 3.88%. Lodging stocks were lower. Data recently released by the National Travel and Tourism Office showed in August, international visitors spent more than $13.7 billion on travel to, and tourism-related activities within, the U.S. Jefferies lowered their price target on Hersha Hospitality to $12 from $13 and Sunstone Hotel Investors to $11 from $12. -

Business Travel Shows No Sign of a Recession
The DJIA fell another 0.6% on Tuesday, Nasdaq was down 0.1%, the S&P 500 fell 0.5% and the 10-year treasury yield rose to 3.963%, its peak since 2010. Truist reported on a conference call it held with corporate travel data company Tripbam . Takeaways included that any indications of a recession have not yet shown up in business travel bookings and pricing data . Evercore ISI Group upped its rating on Hyatt to Outperform from In Line. Their price target is $100. -

IHG’s Data Breach Concerns
The DJIA rose 230 points while Nasdaq was up 154, the S&P 500 rose 43 points and the 10-year treasury yield was up .04 to 3.36%. Lodging stocks were modestly higher. IHG’s hack appears to be a lot worse than the ones at other hotels as the ransomware attack may very well impact their 3Q results as they continue to have their online reservation system crippled by the attack. Watermark Lodging Trust said the proposed acquisition of the company by private real estate funds managed by Brookfield was approved by its stockholders. -

New U.S. Lodging Per Diems Disappoint
Fed Chief Jerome Powell once again roiled the financial markets with a speech. JP Morgan cut its view on IHG Hotels & Resorts to Neutral from Overweight. Hoteliers did not seem very pleased with the US General Services Administration’s increase in lodging per diems for 2023. -

U.S. Group Bookings Increase While Biz Travel Lags
The DJIA rose 323 points while Nasdaq jumped 208, the S&P 500 rose 59 points, and the 10-year Treasury yield took a breather, down .08 to 3.03%. Inflation, energy prices, supply chain challenges, labor shortages, and regional developments are pushing the forecast for full recovery into 2026, instead of the previously forecasted 2024. According to the latest monthly data from STR and CoStar , the number of groups booking U.S. hotel rooms continued to increase in June, although individual business travel continued to lag. -

Global Hotel Groups Are Sitting on Piles of Cash
The DJIA rose 61 points, Nasdaq was up 50, the S&P 500 was up 12 points and the 10-year Treasury yield is quickly rising to where it peaked in June, up another .05 to 3.11%. STR said US RevPAR for the week ended 8/20 was up 16.9% versus the same week last year. Global hotel groups are holding near-record amounts of cash. Seven of the best-known hotel groups were collectively sitting on about $7.3 billion in cash and short-term investments as of the end of June . -

Global Travel Prices to Increase Through 2023
The DJIA surged 515 points, Nasdaq was up 361, the S&P 500 was up 88 and suddenly the 10 year treasury yield is calm and the indexes are nuts again. STR said US Lodging RevPAR was up 12.2% year over year for the week ended 8/6. Global travel prices are predicted to continue to increase in the remaining months of 2022 and throughout 2023, according to the 2023 Global Business Travel Forecast.
