Asia-Pacific Construction Pipeline at Close of Q3

The supposed reopening trade for China stocks hit a speed bump as the realization set in with investors that Covid cases are not going down, in fact they continue to go up. For the sixth straight day, the number of new cases topped 20,000 with a new seven month high today of more than 26,000. Guangdong is once again has doubled their cases, reporting more than 9,000 today. A five day lockdown of the Baiyun district has been ordered. On another note, Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee brought back a present from the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum in Thailand, testing positive for Covid when he returned to Hong Kong.

According to the recent Q3 2022 close of the Construction Pipeline Trend Report for the Asia Pacific region from Lodging Econometrics. Asia Pacific’s total construction pipeline, excluding China, stands at 1,881 projects/401,545 rooms. Following are charts with status updates for non-China markets in the region.

ONYX Hospitality Group said they reinforced their expansion plan with a strategic focus on its home territory of Thailand and neighboring destination, Malaysia. Their neighbor will be the first outside Thailand to operate all three brands. ONYX is also expanding their footprint in the Maldives, Laos, Sri Lanka, Hong Kong and Japan. ONYX said they are on track to operate 54 properties by 2025, up from the current 44 properties. In addition to expanding their regional footprint, they are also poised to reposition their three core brands, Amari, OZO and Shama in response to the evolving consumer landscape. This includes the recent refresh of some existing key properties. The company spend US$100 million to redevelop the Amari Pattaya and OZO North Pattaya. Amari Watergate in Bangkok has also recently completed a US$32 million refurbishment. In Malaysia, the OZO Medini Iskandar will open by the end of the year, Shama Medini Iskandar in Q1 2023, bringing the total number of properties in the country to six in 2023. Serviced apartment brand Shama will have six properties in Bangkok by the end of this year. In the Maldives, the Amari Raaya Maldives will open in Q1 2023 and sometime in 2023, the Amari Colombo Sri Lanka will open its doors.

Minor Hotels announced the signing of a management agreement with Phuket Boat Lagoon Co. Ltd. to rebrand the existing Boat Lagoon Resort in Phuket to NH Boat Lagoon Phuket Resort, marking the arrival of NH Hotels to Thailand and the brand’s Asia debut on November 1, 2022. This follows the announcement of the NH Collection Chiang Mai Ping River which is set to open in mid-2023, the first hotel under the boutique NH Collection brand in Thailand. The NH Boat Lagoon Phuket Resort will be located on the east coast of Phuket, in the heart of the Boat Lagoon, Phuket’s first full service marina. The 271 key property will feature a mix of rooms and serviced apartments, all day dining restaurant, lobby café, swimming pool with a bar, gym, tennis court and a kids club. The resort will offer extensive meeting and event facilities as well as the Boat Lagoon marina with a range of local shops and conveniences, restaurants and entertainment facilities.

Boutique Corporation Public Company Limited announced it welcomed its newest arrival under the BOS Model, Jono Bangkok Asok Hotel. The hotel depicts the ultimate sanctuary for digital nomads, offering a stylish select-service lifestyle experience encompassing everything nomadic travelers require to stay connected without the frills of a quintessential hotel experience. The hotel features 65 rooms in three categories: Recharge, RechargeX and Snooze Black-Out. Jono Bangkok’s launch comes less than a month after the opening of JonoX Phuket Karon Hotel. The brand’s first management property is said to be fully booked until the end of January 2023.

Accor’s Pullman Hotels & Resorts brand announced the opening of Pullman Jinhua, a 322 room hotel in the heart of Jinhua City in Zhejiang Province, one of the major cities in the Yangtze River Delta G60 Science and Technology Innovation Corridor. This follows the opening of Pullman Shenzhen North less than two weeks ago. Accor is also set to open the Pullman Huai’an Falcon before the end of the year. A new Pullman hotel development was just signed at Tianfu International Health Town. Pullman Jinhua is the brand’s forty-eighth hotel in Greater China, located in the central business district of Wucheng District. The hotel is open but will be undergoing a series of upgrades including a new lobby lounge, social hub, two restaurants, MEET/PLAY facilities and a Pullman Fit Lounge. The Pullman Hui’an Falcon will open before the end of the year with 368 rooms, located in the Huaiyin District Falcon City.

The Cap Padaran Mui Dinh JSC under the F.I.T. Group and Banyan Tree Holdings Ltd held a signing ceremony in Bangkok on November 14 on cooperating in developing the Cap Padaran Mui Dinh project in Vietnam. The resort project is being developed on an area of nearly 800 ha in south-central Ninh Thuan province and includes resorts, hotels, beach villas, hotel apartment complexes and entertainment and sports complexes. Total investment is more than $1 billion. The first phase, the Bai Trang Resort will be built on an area of 64 ha, including international 5-star hotel and resort villas with synchronous infrastructure and utilities. Banyan Tree and Cap Padaran Mui Dinh JSC will proactively review the master plan and design of the entire project to ensure their strategies align.

The Crowne Plaza Resort Guam, formerly the Fiesta Resort Guam, marked its soft opening on Friday following a $45 million renovation that transformed the Tumon hotel into a luxurious getaway. The beachfront hotel has rebranded as an upscale resort and rebranded. The 321 room hotel is expected to hold its grand opening around April 2023. Tan Holdings owns the hotel, partnering with IHG on the rebranding and renovation. That included new bar and restaurant concepts, the adult pool being transformed into an oasis, just steps away from the ocean. The hotel will soon open a new children’s pool, complete with a water slide. Crowne Plaza Resort Guam’s sister hotel in the Northern Marianas, the rebranded Crowne Plaza Resort Saipan, recently held its grand opening after a $43 million refurbishment.
