The Land and Urban Construction Bureau in Macau said nearly 3,000 new hotel rooms are under construction within the five new hotels currently being developed. Seven more hotel projects are in the planning phase but they would only total an additional 900 rooms. As of June, there were 48,408 hotel rooms across 149 hotels in Macau, according to the Macao Government Tourism Office with almost 80% being rated either five or four star. Despite the government forcing the casinos to spend billions on non-gaming amenities, resulting in a surge in the so-called low rolling mass market or non-gamblers, only 4.1% of the hotels are two-star with another 2.4% categorized as economical accommodation establishments.
