Golden Week Visitors to Macau Drop 8% From 2024

Skift Take

Despite a single-day post-Covid high, Macau's Golden Week visitor arrivals are down year-over-year, with Mainland China visitation seeing a significant decline.

The first five days of the eight-day Golden Week holiday resulted in 821,016 visitor arrivals to Macau. A new single-day post-Covid visitor high took place on Friday with 219,092 arrivals. While that is the headline, the reality is that arrivals are down year over year for the first five days, down -8.6% from the first five days in 2024. Visitation from Mainland China during those five days is down -11.3% year on year at 606,231.

The South China Morning Post said hotels in Hong Kong are reporting occupancy rates of more than 90% over Lunar New Year but that is just a façade for what appears to be a weaker-than-expected Golden Week holiday. Industry insiders are reporting on shorter stays and a continued reluctance by mainland Chinese visitors to spend. The original forecast was for 1.45 million mainland tourists expecting to visit the city between January 28 and February 4, about 15% more than in 2024.
