Thailand Commits to Tourism Subsidy Despite Delay

Tourism is booming across Asia with hotels reporting high bookings for May Day Golden Week and companies like Ascott Limited expanding their portfolios. Thailand said it would continue its subsidy scheme for domestic tourists during the low season.

Bloomberg reported that many Hong Kong hotels are already fully booked for the upcoming May Day Golden Week. Bloomberg said booking apps are showing hotels in neighborhoods popular among tourists are either sold out or have few remaining rooms available. Hong Kong’s Financial Secretary was quoted as saying that about 840,000 tourists from the Mainland are expected to visit Hong Kong during the holiday period, up 10% from last year.

The Macao Government Tourism Office expects Macau to receive between 127,000 and 140,000 visitor arrivals each day in the upcoming Golden Week. The MGTO said the city could receive between 635,000 and 700,000 visitor arrivals during the five-day holiday break. The low end would represent close to a 5% increase over the same holiday period last year, and the high end would be a 15.7% jump.
