The World Travel & Tourism Council said China is on track to reclaim its position as the world’s largest outbound travel market in 2026, with spending forecast to surge by 22.5% to nearly US$280 billion. The 2026 Economic Impact Research data explains that China will surpass the U.S. for the top spot this year, while also sitting second for business travel spending at US$192 billion. The report showed China’s inbound tourism industry is undergoing a phase of accelerated expansion, placing the country firmly on track to become the world’s leading travel and tourism economy in the coming years if the current trends continue. In 2025, China welcomed more than 68 million international visitors, up 15.5% year-on-year. International visitor spending rose 10.5% to US$135 billion, exceeding pre-pandemic levels.
