Japan Inbound Tourism Falls as China Arrivals Drop Further

Japan saw inbound visitation fall by 4.9% in January, as arrivals from China fell by 61%. Plus, hotel deal and development news.

STR/CoStar reported China hotel data for the week ended February 14th. Hotel RevPAR in China was up 0.5%, up against an easy comp of a 49.7% decline in the year-ago week. With the difference in the Lunar New Year timing, you need to take January and February 2025 and compare them to January/February 2024 to get the real picture. For the 2025 week, ADR was up 9.4%, but occupancy was down 8.2%.

The Japan National Tourism Organization said inbound visitation fell by 4.9% in January as the standoff with China resulted in the first time since Covid that Japan endured a monthly drop. Arrivals from China fell by 61% in January, accelerating from the 45% decline seen in December. Visitation from Hong Kong was down 18%. While South Korea, Taiwan, and U.S. arrivals rose, it was not enough to offset these declines.
