Maldives Hotel Bookings Are Victims of Social Media Spat
China’s hotel RevPAR surged 56.1% year-over-year for the week ending December 30th, showing a significant recovery compared to the previous year’s decline. The Maldives experienced a backlash from Indian tourists, with a significant number of hotel booking and flight ticket cancellations, following offensive comments by Maldivian politicians against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. IHG’s Holiday Inn Resorts and Express Surpasses Milestones
Wharf Holdings is planning to open 25 Maqo hotels by 2025 and is discussing expansions in China, Japan, and Thailand. IHG is introducing a new Holiday Inn Resort in Maharashtra, India, for 2027 and announced significant growth of their Holiday Inn Express brand in Greater China. Macau’s Events Attendance Reaches 96% of 2019 Levels
Macau’s gaming tourism area hosted over 245 MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) events in the third quarter of 2023, a 231% increase from the previous year. China’s Hotel Pipeline Inches up 3% Year Over Year
Amara Holdings received a voluntary cash offer at 60 cents per share from a consortium linked to Albert Teo, Amara’s CEO, other members of his family, and private equity investor Dymon Asia. In the Q3 2023 China Construction Pipeline Trend Report by Lodging Econometrics , at the end of the quarter, China’s total construction pipeline reached a record high of 3,720 projects with 686,017 rooms, up 3% by projects and unchanged by rooms year-over-year. Hilton’s Planned Hotel Openings in Asia Pacific
JLL’s Hotel Momentum India report said a total of 59 hotels comprising around 4,700 keys were signed in India in the last quarter. Hilton announced some of their 2024 planned openings in the Asia Pacific region. First up will be Conrad Singapore Orchard on January 1. The Sri Lanka Convention Bureau is working to establish the country’s Northern province as a destination for MICE for South India . -

China Resumes Group Tours to South Korea
China ‘s hotel RevPAR rose by 22% YoY as of the week ending August 5th, and by 6.7% compared to the same week in 2019. China lifted its ban on group tours to over 70 locations, including countries in Asia Pacific, Europe , Africa , and North America . Notably, group tours to South Korea are resuming for the first time in six years. Indonesia’s ONE°15 Marina Nirup Island opened, with phase two set to include a Westin Hotels & Resorts property by Q4 2024. -

Jakarta Tourism Rebounds to 2018 Levels
Chinese travelers’ spending on travel and tourism within China surged by 95.9% year over year in the first half of the year, with urban residents leading the increase. Jakarta’s hotel industry experienced its highest average daily rate and RevPAR levels since October 2018, with June 2023 occupancy reaching 66.7%. Bali will implement a US$10 tax per foreign holidaymaker starting in 2024, aiming to fund environmental initiatives, cultural preservation, and infrastructure development. -
