Hotel Worker Strikes Resume in Boston

About 400 workers at four Boston hotels began a three-day strike on Thursday. They're seeking higher wages and staffing levels.
The DJIA rose 235 points, the Nasdaq was up 174, and the S&P 500 rose 42 points. The 10-year treasury yield was up .03 to 3.68%. Lodging stocks were higher, with no big movers, but it was a solid day all around. Baird reported on how union hotel workers began striking again in Boston. Unite Here reported the four hotels that they had workers go on strike at include the Dagny, owned by DiamondRock and managed by Aimbridge; W Boston, owned by Pebblebrook, managed by Marriott; the Newbury and Moxy Boston Downtown, both managed by Highgate. Baird said workers at Sunstone Hotel ’s1,190-room Hilton San Diego Bayfront remain on strike. Baird said they have not changed estimates for any companies involved they have coverage on, but the longer these strikes last, the greater the negative financial impact. Hotel News Now also reported that workers went on strike at the Omni New Haven Hotel in New Haven, CT. Developer LRE TR LLC received board approval to construct a three-story, 125-room hotel at 1020 Hooper Avenue in Toms River, New Jersey. Plans for the site, according to public records, call for the construction of either a Courtyard by Marriott hotel or a Residence Inn by Marriott hotel with a restaurant located on a pad site. The luxury hotel market in Honolulu has a new entrant with the rebranding and opening of Ka La’I Waikiki Beach and LXR Hotels & Resorts. The 38-story, 462-room high-rise hotel is owned by Irongate and managed by LXR Hotels & Resorts. The hotel’s list of amenities includes a wellness and fitness center, an infinity pool with a sun deck, and two signature restaurants. The property will undergo a thorough renovation beginning in early 2025 and be phased over a number of months. The redesign will include upgrading the guest accommodations and public areas, from the lobby interiors and the pool, spa, and fitness center to the exterior landscaping. Hospitality Ventures Management Group has assumed management of the 232-suite Embassy Suites by Hilton Bloomington/Minneapolis. The company will also oversee a $9 million renovation project to upgrade the guestrooms, public space, restaurant, and back-of-house items. The renovation on the property will take approximately six months. The hotel provides 5,600 square feet of meeting space, an indoor pool, and a fitness center. Arlington City Council approved a request from Stonewood Hotels to rezone a property near the Arlington Municipal Airport for construction of a five-story, 134-room Home2 Suites by Hilton hotel. Located on S. Collins Street in Arlington, Texas, the hotel will include a business center, 1,000 square feet of meeting space, a fitness center, guest laundry, a pool, and grilling area. Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants is expanding its presence in New York City in partnership with Extell Development Company. Located in the heart of Midtown Manhattan, Kimpton Rockefeller Center is slated to open in late 2025. The 33-story hotel will feature 529 guestrooms and inspired social spaces, including two full-service restaurants, a lobby lounge, and a rooftop bar. Additional amenities will include a fitness center and two spaces to host meetings and social gatherings. Crews have spent the summer restoring part of the historic Omni Grove Park Inn in Asheville, North Carolina. The efforts focus on restoring the 142 original rooms in the main inn and the Palm Court space. The work is slated for completion this month. Charlotte County Board of Commissioners gave final site approval for a 63-room hotel on Sandhill Boulevard in Port Charlotte, Florida. Legacy Builders is the contractor for the four-story, extended-stay My Place Hotel. Legacy couldn’t provide the name of the franchisee of this location. My Place Hotels has more than 70 locations in 31 states but none in Florida. The former Radisson Hotel in downtown Dayton, Ohio, is set to become a Dayton Vitality Hotel under the management of Bright Hotels. While no official opening is known, Bright Hotels’ most recent estimation is to have a portion of the hotel opening in six months. The hotel sits within close proximity to the Dayton Convention Center but was not selected as the center’s headquarters hotel. Developer Shree Kulkarni of Kulkarni Properties is planning to build a new extended-stay hotel at the Cincinnati Innovation District in Walnut Hills, Ohio. The project is a five-story hotel with around 100 rooms and a surface lot with approximately 100 parking spaces. According to hotelprojectleads.com, construction is expected to start in the middle of next year and will take around 18 months to complete. The historic Wawona Hotel inside Yosemite National Park has been slated for an extended closure starting December 2, 2024. A recent roof replacement project revealed that a more comprehensive condition assessment of the hotel complex needs to be done. A new boutique hotel is just weeks away from opening in downtown Amherstburg, ON, Canada. Hotel STRY began taking bookings earlier this month and will open to guests beginning in October. Constructed in 1875, the property has undergone extensive renovations and is now ready for its next chapter. Hotel STRY houses six large suites, each with its own unique theme. Guests have direct access to Pure Day Spa Amherstburg from within the hotel. Frate Street Food is also located onsite and shares a patio with the hotel’s bar. Six months after its monumental market debut, Vie L’Ven Resort & Residences, a luxurious 280-room resort and residences on the shores of Indigo Bay, St. Maarten, Altree Developments announced significant advancements in construction, with completion on target for High-Seasons 2027/2028. Key accomplishments include the completion of bulk excavation for foundation preparation and the successful construction of a new parking facility to serve the onsite beach and beach bar restaurant, one of the three on-property restaurants. The groundbreaking foundation work is firmly scheduled before the end of 2024. On-property amenities will consist of a beach club, private cabanas, water sports, pickleball and tennis courts, a gym, lobby bar, all-day dining, children’s playroom with additional child care services and pet-friendly areas. The 280 residences feature expansive layouts, oceanfront views, private balconies, terraces, intimate plunge pools, and high-style furnishings, all surrounded by exotic gardens. RobertDouglas represented, as exclusive advisor, Flynn Properties in arranging a $54 million refinancing of a six-hotel Courtyard by Marriott portfolio. The institutional-quality, six-hotel, 889-key, Marriott-managed portfolio includes the 144-key Courtyard Fairfax Fair Oaks, 146-key Courtyard Baltimore Hunt Valley, 150-key Courtyard New Carrollton Landover, 158-key Courtyard Philadelphia Plymouth Meeting, 145-key Courtyard San Antonio Airport, and 146-key Courtyard San Antonio Medical Center. According to The Real Deal, Chartres Lodging Group has picked up a 179-room Mid-Century hotel next to the newly opened Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California for $57.2 million. The seller of the Lum Hotel was Izek Shomof. RJA Hotels held the listing. HVS Brokerage & Advisory announced the sale of the 130-key Marina Inn & Suites Chalmette-New Orleans, located in Chalmette, Louisiana.
