Tokyo Unveils Hotel Tax Hikes for 2027

Tokyo, Japan, unveiled a plan to overhaul its accommodation tax system, replacing the current flat-rate structure with a percentage-based model. In most cases it will boost what people pay. Plus, more hotel development news.
STR/CoStar reported China hotel data for the week ended November 22nd. Hotel RevPAR in China was up 2.8% year over year, up against a comp of a decline of -2.7% in the year-ago week. For the 2025 week, occupancy was down -2% but ADR was up 4.9%.
Macau's hotels recorded an average occupancy rate of 89.3% in October, a gain of 0.9 percentage points from October 2024. The Macau Statistics and Census Service said 5-star hotels saw a 1.8 percentage point increase to 93.5% while 4-star hotels were up 1 percentage point to 83.7%. The occupancy rate for 3-star hotels fell by 2.6 percentage points to 82.4%. For the first 10 months of 2025, the average occupancy rate of Macau's hotels was 89.3%, up 3.6 percentage points year on year.
