International Visitors to the U.S. Bring in New Highs

The DJIA rose 334 points, Nasdaq was up 52, the S&P 500 rose 21 points and the 10 year treasury yield was down .09 to 4.13%. Apple Hospitality reported a modest beat with RevPAR up 7.5% versus 3Q19. In September and October APLE bought back a modest amount of stock just above $14 a share. Sunstone Hotel Investors reported a slight 3Q beat. SHO continues to be a buyer of their own stock under $10.

Goldman Sachs Suggests China Should Keep Zero-Covid Policy

Goldman Sachs said the Chinese government still needs to keep its Zero-Covid policy until probably the April-June quarter. Some 39 buildings of the No.2 Island of the Ocean Flower Island , an artificial archipelago in Danzhou , South China’s Hainan Province developed by China’s debt-ridden Evergrande Group will be repurposed. Vietnam’s second-biggest listed developer, No Va Land , is firing staff and seeking urgent asset sales.

Choice Hotels Receives Mixed Response to Earnings

Lodging stocks were mixed. Choice (CHH) was the big loser, down -9%, while MCG was down -7% and AINC fell -6%. Choice Hotels received a mixed response to their 3Q earnings report from analysts and a big thumbs down from investors. Hilton announced the opening of its two-hundredth hotel in the Caribbean and Latin America, Waldorf Astoria Cancun , a 173-room luxury resort set on 100 acres of coastline.

Marriott Adding Brands and Properties in India

Marriott International will be adding about 13-14 hotels in India under different brands in the next 12 months. Hong Kong has continued to loosen Covid restrictions , now targeting eventgoers. Hilton announced the signing of an agreement with Wondergrain Exports Private Limited to launch DoubleTree by Hilton Amritsar .

DiamondRock Beats Preliminary Results

DiamondRock Hospitality reported 3Q results, beating the preliminary results they announced two weeks ago. Jefferies cut its rating on Xenia Hotels & Resorts to Hold from Buy. Lodging stocks were mixed. SLNA plunged another -20%, quickly becoming the biggest disaster in a long line of SPAC disappointments in the past year

Lodging Stocks Lower Despite Strong Earnings

Lodging stocks were lower again. SLNA looks like it is going to go down to penny stock status, down another -28% to another new low. The last 24 hours had a barrage of earnings reports and not many of them were taken well. Hyatt was picked as the best of the group even with results some deemed as weaker than expected which says a lot about the other reports. Marriott’s 3Q was in line but net rooms growth was trimmed for the full year with China blamed.

Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia Ramp Up Medical Tourism

STR reported China hotel RevPAR the week ended October 29 was down -17.1% year over year. When up against the similar week in 2019, hotel RevPAR fell -44.8%. The South China Morning Post published an article on medical tourism being ramped up in Asia. The article focused on Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia  courting medical tourists. Bali is seeking to attract world-class hospitals to the tropical island, adding medical treatment to its roster of offerings.

Earnings Reports and Interest Rates Spook Investors

Lodging stocks were down before the Fed decision to raise interest rates by another 75 basis points and conference call but the selling accelerated after, led by the REITs, not surprisingly. Investors did not take the earnings reports from Airbnb, Ashford Hospitality Trust or Xenia Hotels & Resorts very well. Meanwhile STR reported for the week ended 10/29, US hotel RevPAR was up 33.5% year over year.

India's Hotel Sector Grows in First Three Quarters

Looking at  India's  hotel sector , JLL  said contracts in  mid-market and budget brands  grew 74% between January and September 2022 as compared to the same period in 2019. Marriott International’s St. Regis Hotels and Resorts brand announced the opening of the St. Regis Goa Resort. Bengaluru-based real estate developer MS Ramaiah Developers and Builders  plans to invest about Rs 1,100 crore over two years across real estate sectors in Karnataka, Goa, and Andhra Pradesh .

Marriott Leads the Construction Pipeline in the U.S.

Ryman Hospitality Properties beat 3Q EBITDA estimates while giving a small 4Q guidance raise. Lodging stocks were mixed. SOND rose 8% but Selina (SLNA) plunged another -23% and is now down to near where it was in price when they completed the merger with BOA. Timeshare is definitely a mixed bag this earnings season. Following up on TNL’s disappointing results, Marriott Vacations gave a mixed 3Q along with guidance that seems mixed as well.

Covid Cases in China Spur Multiple Lockdowns

The rumors about Covid in China  have reached epic proportions including 20,000 people testing positive at the Foxconn plant, thousands of holidaymakers locked in Shanghai Disney and more. Marriott International announced the signing of an agreement with Australian property developers Pelligra Group and Giannarelli Group . IHG Hotels & Resorts has officially opened its first Crowne Plaza Resort in Micronesia.

According to the third quarter United States Construction Pipeline Trend Report from Lodging Econometrics , the U.S. market with the largest hotel construction pipeline by projects is Dallas . Despite down markets, lodging stocks were modestly higher even though the two biggest movers were to the downside. BWH Hotel Group announced the launch of a new extended stay brand .
