STR/CoStar reported China hotel data for the week ended June 27th. China hotel RevPAR was down 6.8% year-over-year. It was up against a decline of 2.8% in the year-ago week. The decline in the 2026 week was mainly due to a decline of 5.8% year-over-year for occupancy, as ADR was only down 1.1%.
Japan has tripled the International Tourist Tax it charges on those departing the country, effective as of July 1. Japan did this in response to increasing tourist numbers in the country. The tax increased from US$6.15 to US$18.45, with the collected funds supporting the maintenance of public works, critical infrastructure at airports and tourist sites, restoration of historic assets, and the creation of online tourist resources. The “sayonara tax” is collected upon departure from Japan, applying to all departing travelers, including Japanese nationals.
